It would be cool if you could choose how many cards go into the nest.
i've played it this way and it makes it more challenging and makes you have different strategies at hand to use.

We often play with only 1 card for the nest, which can often put more emphasis on the hand dealt rather than going void in a suite by discarding to the nest.

We've always played with 5 (without the 2's 3's and 4's in the deck) when playing 4 handed. The only other way I've seen it is when playing 6 handed playing with the 2, 3, 4 in the deck and having 3 in the nest.

It would have to be a number that still deals the same number of cards to each player, right? In other words, you couldn't put 7 cards in the widow because that would leave some players with more cards than others.
So if I understand correctly, other than 5 in the widow, 1 card in the widow could work or maybe 9 in the widow (or 13? crazy! that's a whole hand when cards 1-4 are included!). Any other amount would give leave certain players with different numbers of cards in their hands. I don't really see 13 cards or more in the widow as being fun anymore.
