We do this sometimes at home as well...we call the nest the "kitty" and the dealer can choose one card from the kitty to be shown. We call this "teasing the kitty"

I like the final hand worth 20...and call partners for that matter.... :) We've done both.

Funny that's the way I always play, always bleed trump because otherwise the other "team" is trumping in. Typically I am not taking the nest unless I have a very good chance to have 5 or more of any one color. Because I always want to be able to bleed trump and have one left for the last hand as well. (though in real life when we play we do points in the nest and the last hand is worth 20 points too (200 total points instead of 180).

I added this in another suggestion but our variations are a little different. We don't play red one...only play bird low and when we go low card there is still trump but the power is just reversed on all cards except the bird which is still lowest trump.

Our version of "shooting the moon" (that's what we call it too) is also done during bidding. The player who calls "shoot the moon" has to take EVERY hand, points or no points, their partner can't even take a hand....and if successful they get 400 points. I've only seen it done successfully a couple of times.

The way you are describing playing it would be interesting as well...

We've always played with 5 (without the 2's 3's and 4's in the deck) when playing 4 handed. The only other way I've seen it is when playing 6 handed playing with the 2, 3, 4 in the deck and having 3 in the nest.

I am voting for this too but would like to add more detail.
    Two specific things:
    1. Very rarely does the computer get set...because they are just never aggressive in bidding for the nest....It would be nice to have an option to set the bidding aggressiveness level (maybe a 3 level setting where they are more aggressive the higher the level...) (note that the new update makes this better but it could still be improved)

    2. In game play: The biggest complaint I have is that all the AI Players always seem to hold point cards in favor of cards that could take tricks. So I could be "bleeding trump" and have the 1, 14 and the 12. At the same time my opponent could have the 13, 10 and 5. I play the one and my opponent will play the 13 to protect the points....but if it were me I would probably play the points first KNOWING that I am going to get one trick if I hang onto the 13...His partner could throw me the bird when he plays the 13, or a 1 or 14 or 10 etc....

The AI consistently holds points over taking tricks...It would be nice to see some way to get them to realize that they can be guaranteed a hand and sometimes hold the card to take the trick vs the points...

We also play this way sometimes, it makes it easier to fill holes and generally increases how high the winning bidder on the nest has to bid. I would suggest that if this variation is added (and I would like to see it) that it would be accompanied by logic that makes the AI more aggressive in bidding on the nest.
